OISIN Smyth said it was a surreal feeling when his wonder strike hit the back of the net to earn Oxford United a late win at Charlton Athletic.
The goal was his first for the U’s, and came in some style as he fired home from 30 yards out.
The midfielder said after the game: “As soon as it opened up for me, I thought I’d hit it and thankfully it went in.
“It was brilliant. The boys said I stood still for a couple of seconds, and it was a surreal feeling.
“Hopefully that’s not the last and there are a few more to come.”
The 23-year-old added: “I came into the game thinking I’d be happy to get a few minutes, and then when Jordan’s [Thorniley] pulled up through injury, we had to make a late change.
“The gaffer asked me if I was happy to step in and thankfully I did.
“I played the Forest Green game in a similar position, and the first five or 10 minutes were about me getting my bearings and trying to deal with the pace they had on the left side.
“After that, I think we dealt with it pretty well.
“That was my first [league] start since Barnsley away last year, it’s been a little while and I’m not getting those regular minutes.
“It was always going to be tough coming into it, but at the end of the day, we train all week to stay fit and be ready when called upon.”
