OXFORD Quins’ 3rd XV have effectively won their league with three rounds to spare after thrashing Aylesbury’s 2nd XV.

The 86-5 home win ensured Quins remained unbeaten in Counties 3 Tribute Berks Bucks & Oxon North.

Quins are 17 points ahead of Buckingham’s 2nd XV, with three rounds remaining, effectively winning the league as only 15 points can be won from the final three rounds.

Quins’ 3rd XV reformed last season and during their first campaign, won their league and achieved promotion.

In this their second season, led by team captain Henry Folds, they have remained unbeaten, scoring 801 points in 15 matches, conceding only 137, and earned 13 try bonus points.

Stu Wells, director of rugby at Quins, said: “This season is exceeding all expectations.

“Back-to-back promotions for our men’s 3rd XV, an unbeaten season and promotion within touching distance for our men’s 2nd XV, a top five finish within sight for our men’s 1st XV in a tough new league following promotion, and a top four finish for our women’s 1st XV.”

The 1st XV host Banbury in what is set to be a high stakes game at Horspath Road on Saturday.

Following last weekend’s 28-19 victory at home to second from bottom Royal Wootton Bassett, Banbury edged out of the relegation zone by a single point.

After their trip to Quins, the north Oxfordshire side then face the current top three in their following fixtures.

A home clash against third-placed Camberley is then followed by current leaders Wimbledon making the trip to Banbury on March 4.

Banbury then go to Havant, currently second in the table, on March 11.

Getting points against Quins could therefore be pivotal for Banbury if they are to avoid relegation this season.

A win for Quins though, currently fifth in Regional 1 South Central, would secure a place in the Papa John’s Community Cup.

The competition is part of the wider season restructure, which saw the biggest changes to the men’s leagues in 30 years.

It offers the opportunity for players to play at Twickenham Stadium or other prestigious venues.

Quins meanwhile are celebrating the reunion of Oxford Old Boys on Saturday, with more than 100 former players expected for a pre-match lunch.
