Sir — As we enter another round of consultation on whether the countryside around Carterton should be allocated for development, we note that in your article the petition signed by 1,748 Carterton residents was mentioned in passing, but its significance was completely lost.

The petition was presented to Carterton Town Council by anxious Carterton residents in response to the last round of consultation to protest against the inclusion of the western option, to build a satellite housing estate over Alvescot Downs, to the west of the Shill Brook, as an extension to Carterton.

Over a third of all the households in Carterton took part in the petition, and 93 per cent of the householders signed it.

The objection against the western option from Carterton residents is undeniably vast, and is shared by almost all the surrounding parishes and residents’ groups.
