Sir, It was with great interest that I read your article concerning the Yellow Ribbon Foundation and the activities being held in Carterton.
As the wife of a serving member of the Royal Air Force, based at Brize Norton for the last 12 years of our married life, I nor any of my friends cannot begin to recognize the family life Mrs Evans describes in your article.
Every time my husband has been sent out of area on operation, I and my children are given all the help we need. If I need anything, I know that I only have to phone my husband's section for help.
I have never felt uninformed about my husband's duties or where he is going. If a wife is uninformed, it is in a lot of cases due to her husband not passing on the relevant information.
I have always carried RAF form 1714, which gives you details of how to have your relative sent home from operation overseas. And above all, we have two HIVEs here at Brize, a family welfare facility, which is tri-service and is available to all. They hold up-to-the-minute advice on all matters, and if they can't answer a question. they know someone who can . . .
Let us not forget the fantastic work that the Royal British Legion does - this charity does more to help serving and ex-serving personal than any other. All the help you need as a service spouse, or the extended family of a member of the armed forces, is available.
While I am sure that Mrs Evans is only trying to do good, you have to bear in mind that the British Forces have always looked after their own.
Heidi Griffin (Mrs), Yatesbury Road, Carterton
