Sir – I can assure those supporting unrestricted access for vehicles at Witney’s Tower Hill Cemetery that marked graves have been damaged by cars.
My wife’s grandmother’s grave, which has a headstone and kerbing, has been seriously damaged on three occasions.
Following the second incident, the council installed a concrete bollard in front of the grave.
Shortly after, a car crashed into and over the bollard on to the grave and had to be removed by a recovery truck.
Distressing as this was to the family, it could have been more distressing had someone been tending the grave at the time.
We advised the leisure and recreation committee of our concerns but the views of those who shout loudest, however ill-informed, have prevailed.
