Sir – Regarding the proposal to introduce remote-controlled gates at Tower Hill Cemetery for disabled, elderly or infirm people to have vehicle access to the cemetery: councillors are not qualified to decide who can have vehicle access, therefore those who do not have a blue badge would require a letter from their doctor.
I can’t help but think this is wrong. There is the use of GPs’ time when they are always busy, and then doctors’ letters have to be paid for.
As many elderly people were upset by having to make appointments, this will be a further upset.
In the report, it mentioned only 11 regular people made appointments, but there are many more who found the closure of the gates offensive, and have had to rely on family to care for graves.
And I find it ironic that a doctor signs the last paper to put us in the cemetery, and now they will have to sign for us to visit.
Small posts round the edge of the roads to protect graves and grass are all that is needed, not £11,517 for electronic gates and retractable bollards.
Open the gates.
