A consultation has opened on reducing the speed limit outside Jeremy Clarkson's pub.

Oxfordshire County Council is seeking the public's views on reducing the speed limit on the roads leading to and from the Asthall roundabout on the A40 from 60mph to 40mph.

The proposals are being put forward "to help address potential safety issues due to the intensification of use of the newly opened ‘Farmers Dog’ public house" said the council.

The lower limit would apply on either side of the roundabout at the western end of the Witney bypass.

From there to Burford, the limit would drop from the current 60mph to 50mph as part of Oxfordshire County Council's Vision Zero strategy that seeks to eliminate road deaths.

The former Top Gear presenter, who made his name tearing around race tracks in fast cars, said the predicted traffic issues from the busy adjacent A40 did not arise at the opening of the Farmer's Dog.

He said: “We’ve worked so hard to make sure we can park as many cars as we need to. The traffic is flowing brilliantly.

“The council have learned their lessons and they have been really helpful.”

Oxfordshire County Council said it has worked “closely and pro-actively” with Mr Clarkson’s team ahead of the opening.

Footway improvements were made to better link adjacent bus stops on the B4047, motorists were asked to only use designated off-highway car parks and not park on the roads or verges nearby and a layby on the opposite side of the busy A40 has been closed.

Mr Clarkson is leasing a field from a farmer as an overflow car park.

The consultation on the changes is open until 5pm on Friday 11 October. Asthall: A40 & B4047 - proposed 40mph & 50mph speed limits | Let's Talk Oxfordshire
