A national bank chain has announced it will close its branch in an Oxfordshire town centre in 2025.

Halifax, which is part of Lloyds Banking Group, will close its branch at 29 High Street in Witney, on April 30 next year.

It comes as Lloyds Banking Group announced it will cull 32 Halifax branches, 19 Lloyds branches and four Bank of Scotland locations over the next year.

The bank said the decision had been made as customers are using branches, including Witney much less, and "most customers are now using our mobile banking app, online banking or calling us instead".

The nearest alternative branches are Oxford Westgate 10 miles away or in Cirencester 22 miles away.

In the run-up to the closure it said staff will support customers to get started with the Mobile Banking app and online banking and Halifax signposted other ways to pay in or withdraw cash such as the post-office in the Woolgate Centre and ATMs.

After the branch closes, a Community Banker will be in the area to help customers, providing banking services and account support, the firm said.

They will have dedicated space in a community venue or banking hub.

Over the last few years, a total of 128 Lloyds branches, 119 Halifax branches, and 45 Bank of Scotland have closed or are set to.

Witney still has most of the big-name banks and building societies although HSBC no longer has cashiers unlike communities such as Carterton and Woodstock which have seen their banks close.

Witney town councillor David Edwards-Hughes said: "Compared to other towns, we're lucky in Witney to still have a full complement of high street banks."

He added: "I hope that the members of staff impacted are being well looked after."
