Residents can now have their say on the proposed enhancements to Witney High Street and Market Square.

Oxfordshire County Council is inviting public feedback on the preliminary designs for the improvements, which aim to make the areas more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists, while maintaining the current traffic arrangements.

The council has been awarded £1.98 million from the UK Government’s active travel fund to implement the changes.

In September 2023, residents were asked to share their opinions and suggestions, which helped shape the initial design plan.

The proposed enhancements include the addition of up to 15 new benches where people can sit and socialise, 15 new trees to improve air quality, and 14 new low-level planted areas.

The plan also includes resurfacing 2,300 square metres of existing footway and creating 1,200 square metres of new footway space.

The new footway area will feature traditional Cotswold stone and will support future wayfinding initiatives that celebrate the town's heritage.

The council believes the improvements will not only enhance the town’s appearance for visitors but also create a more welcoming environment for those arriving by foot, bike, or public transport.

Residents can share their thoughts on the preliminary designs by completing an online survey by Thursday, October 10, or by writing to the council at witneyhighstreet@oxfordshire.gov.uk.

Two public events will also be held at Witney Methodist Church on Saturday, September 14, from 10am to 4pm, and Thursday, September 19, from 4pm to 8pm.
