A neglected pub which has stood empty for two years is finally set to reopen.

The Lord Kitchener in Bampton Road, Curbridge, closed down in August 2022 and was put on the market by brewery giant Greene King for £450,000 for the freehold.

It has now been bought by a private buyer who intends to reopen it as a pub.

Selling agents Fleurets said the sale completed in June, but they did not know the detail of the buyers' plans or timescale.

However, they said the pub "needs some work".

The roadside oak-beamed pub dates from the early 18th century when it was known as the Herd of Swine.

The village social club was based there and it supported local charities with separate areas that can be booked for functions.

Curbridge and Lew Parish Council owns a one-acre field alongside the pub called the Lord Kitchener Field.

In the early 2000s the pub was owned by Oxford-based brewery Morrells, which Greene King bought.
