Witney is set to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day by paying tribute to the fallen from the town and around the world.
The commemorations will commence at 9am on Thursday (June 6) when Witney’s Town Crier will proclaim the nation's official cry from an upstairs window of the Corn Exchange.
Throughout the day (from 11am - 6pm) there will be free entry to The D-Day Story exhibition in the Gallery Room at the Corn Exchange which will explore the story of the landings through documents, pictures and evocative sound bites from the time.
The Big Screen at the Corn Exchange will be showing The Great Escaper at 1.30pm based on the true story of veteran Bernard Jordan who absconded from his care home to join other veterans on a beach in Normandy to commemorate the D-Day Landings 70th Anniversary.
Tickets £2 including ‘rations’ are now on sale at Eventbrite.
The day finishes at 7.30pm with The Lamplight of Peace service in the Market Square with veterans, air and army cadets and Witney Town Band.
The service culminates in the lighting of the ‘Lamplight for Peace’ and the reading of the tribute.
