A permanent memorial to those who died with Covid-19 and the community heroes of the pandemic has been unveiled in Witney.

‘Together but Apart’ is now in place at the southern end of the Leys Recreation Ground.

The sculpture consists of two halves: one to commemorate those who lost their lives to Covid, and another giving thanks to those who supported the community. 

The design was chosen by Witney Town Council's stronger communities committee.

The heather-slate slab was cut in two and placed two metres apart.

The council said a bench, set back from the stones "is not only a place to reflect and remember those who were lost to the pandemic, but to recognise the NHS and all Witney’s Covid Heroes who went above and beyond to help others during this harrowing time".

The memorial was installed by the slate suppliers and the bench by the town council's maintenance and works team.

Two new bells will also be hung in St Mary's church to commemorate the people who lived in the town who died during the pandemic.

Witney Ringing Society with the Oxford Diocesan Bell Fund hope to raise enough funds to install a Covid Commemoration Bell and a new Community Bell at the Grade-I listed church.
