A ZOO has paid tribute to a kangaroo which ‘brought joy to everyone’, following its death.

Heythrop Zoological Gardens, a private zoo in Chipping Norton, posted online yesterday to announce the death of Alfie.

The zoo, which is not open to the general public on a day-to-day basis, offers ‘exclusive and unforgettable’ experiences by appointment only.

A post online read: “It is with great sadness we have to report the unexpected passing of our beloved Alfie.

“He was a red kangaroo rejected by his first-time mother in the midst of winter. Miriam Clubb raised him in her home and then successfully reintegrated him into the rest of the mob.

“Alfie, with his curiosity and total lack of fear, became an instant favourite in his department.

“He took to target training but also had his own little quirks. One of these was taking his own time away from the other kangaroos in the tortoise house.

“He was the only member of the group who worked out how to use the giant tortoise ‘cat flap’ and was often found taking a nap with the chelonians.

“However, many an animal trainer would find Alfie at their side when they were getting on with their day-to-day chores.

“He was always up for a chest rub or nibble at whatever item of clothing happened to be hanging down.

“Thank you, Alfie, for all the joy you brought to everyone.”
