Channel 4 is set to 'axe' a popular reality show fronted by EastEnders actor Danny Dyer after only one season.

Scared of the Dark was launched last year and involved celebrities being plunged into darkness for eight days.

Last season's line-up included Love Island star Chloe Burrows, ex-boxer Chris Eubank and comedian Chris McCausland.

The cancellation, which was reported by Deadline, is set to be made as part of a plan by the broadcaster to cut its full-time workforce by 15%, affecting 250 roles.

Speaking about the redundancies, Channel 4 Chief Executive Alex Mahon said: "I am very sad that some of our excellent colleagues will lose their jobs. But the reality of the rapid downshift in the economy and advertising market demand we must change structurally."

She added in a statement that the new strategy would allow the broadcaster to remain "a trusted, disruptive and distinctive brand."

This comes after a handful of other shows like SAS: Who Dares Wins and Steph's Packed Lunch were axed by bosses.

Speaking with the Mirror last year, EastEnders star Danny Dyer branded the reality programme "f***ing hilarious," explaining: "They said, ‘Basically, we’re going to lock eight celebrities in the pitch black for eight days’ and I was like, ‘Sign me up!’"

He added: “It depended on the celebrities for me as well. I wanted it to be interesting people. One of my heroes of all-time is Paul Gascoigne, so as soon as I heard his name I was like, ‘This is amazing’.”

The show, which was watched by more than a million viewers, included iconic moments such as Chris Eubank attempting to remain his alpha male persona and Chris McCausland utilising his blindness as a new superpower.

In the end, it was England star Paul Gascoigne who walked away as the winner.
