Sir – At the consultation event organised by Christ Church Oxford and Bloor Homes (last week’s Gazette), the developer of the proposed Carterton East housing scheme told us that they will seek outline planning consent at the end of the year.
The displays from the developer carefully avoided a number of key issues.
The distance and accessibility of the East Carterton development to Carterton town centre. Residents would be obliged to get in their car to shop in Carterton – but then would they do so?
There was no recognition of the impact of the nearby RAF base, noise and other pollution in particular.
There was no discussion on the subject of coalescence. The distance of the site from existing houses in Burford Road, Brize Norton, was acknowledged to be 150 metres.
We learned a lot about housing density, building heights, the numbers of cars per resident. Questioned about where people would work, there seemed to be little recognition of the lack of employment in and around Carterton. So everyone seems to be happy to see up to 1,400 extra cars travel towards the A40 to Witney and beyond.
The communications consultant for Bloor Homes questioned the Carterton Town Council decision against the development, saying it went against the views of Carterton residents, when the majority would be unaffected by this particular development.
He needs to look at the arguments on the location vis-à-vis Carterton town centre, traffic, provision of existing schooling, etc, to see why the council takes its view.
Dr Phil Holmes, Carterton Road, Brize Norton
